The purpose of this course is to familiarize the learner with Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia, and provide guidelines for the care of persons living with these diseases. This course engages learners in learning about Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia, the characteristics of Alzheimer’s disease, and approach and communication strategies for working with someone living with dementia. The role of family in quality and continuity of care is emphasized. Information about maintaining a supportive and appropriate environment is presented. The course concludes with an exploration of ethical issues related to the care of those who are living with dementia.

The purpose of this course is to familiarize the learner with the care of persons living with Alzheimer’s disease and/or related disorders. This course engages the learner in considering behavior as the language of dementia and techniques for assisting with activities of daily living. The course offers strategies for interpreting behavior as communication and provides a problem-solving approach to address behavioral expressions of distress. Examples of techniques for promoting effective care techniques, independence, and communication are offered throughout the course. Information about how to offer meaningful activities is presented. Medical information, including medications often prescribed for the person living with dementia and the risk of dehydration and malnutrition because of the disease process, is provided. The course ends with a focus on stress management for the caregiver.
