In this course, you will explore the anatomy and physiology of the abdomen. You will become familiar with different examination techniques for assessing this system, and you will learn to distinguish between normal and abnormal assessment findings. You will also learn why auscultation, percussion, and palpation are important to the abdominal assessment. In addition, you will identify when to follow special procedures and age considerations. In this course, you will learn about the importance of prompt identification and proper treatment of abdominal, genitourinary, limb, and vascular injuries. Your familiarity with assessment, intervention and likely complications can positively influence the outcome for a patient with any of these types of injuries. Any delay in definitive treatment generally increases the morbidity and mortality risks for the patient. (70 minutes)

Irregular heartbeat, also called dysrhythmia, is a common admitting diagnosis in the medical surgical setting. Many patients are admitted and monitored until a definitive diagnosis and the cause of their dysrhythmia can be determined. Patients respond differently to the changes in cardiac output often associated with irregular heart rhythms. Some patients develop significant clinical manifestations, whereas others remain asymptomatic. Treatment is based on the cause of the dysrythmia, the patient's response to the dysrhythmia, and its potential to precipitate more serious cardiac dysrythmia. This course will prepare you to effectively assess a patient with an irregular heartbeat and provide appropriate care. (61 minutes)

This course covers two essential components of how drugs move through the body: absorption and distribution. Absorption has to do with how much of a drug is taken in from the site where it is received by the body. In this course, aborption is shown to be strongly associated with the route of drug administration (for example oral or parenteral) and the acidic or basic characteristics of the drug. Distribution pertains to the particular cells and interstitial areas that receive the drug. This course shows how drug distribution is related to fat solubility, and explains the concept of apparent volume of distribution (AVD) and how this is calculated. (58 minutes)

It is your professional responsibility as a nurse to administer drugs in the correct dose to achieve the desired effect. The ability to calculate doses correctly and to convert from one common measurement system to another is essential for safe medication administration. Additionally, the task of medication administration includes understanding the five rights and interpreting both the medication order and drug labels. In this course, you will learn how to calculate doses correctly, interpret a medication order, and interpret a drug label. These skills will be considered in the context of the five rights of medication administration. The Joint Commission and the Institute of Safe Medication Practices have identified many types medication orders that are prone to misinterpretation and error and are now listed on a 'prohibited abbreviations' list. These may change over time, so please access this link to the The Joint Commission pages to view the most current list of these 'prohibited' and 'do not use' abbreviations. http://www.jointcommission.org/ (62 minutes)

The term acute abdomen is used to designate a group of conditions that cause abdominal pain and tenderness of sufficient severity and duration to require surgical evaluation; rapid, accurate assessment; and, frequently, surgical intervention. In this course, you will review the anatomy and pathophysiology of abdominal organs that are associated with these conditions. You will also learn about the clinical presentation and nursing care of patients with bowel obstruction, organ perforation, peritonitis, cholecystitis, appendicitis, vascular occlusion, trauma, and gynecological causes of the acute abdomen. (67 minutes)

Acute kidney injury (AKI), formerly known as acute renal failure (ARF) is a common, treatable, and often reversible process. AKI occurs when kidney functioning suddenly deteriorates and the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) falls abruptly. There are three phases of acute kidney injury, each with clear clinical manifestations. In this course, you will learn to recognize, assess, and treat prerenal, intrarenal, and postrenal failure.
