Many individuals who are in a hospital or at home following a prolonged illness or injury that impacts mobility become frustrated when they cannot move around as they desire. Mobility and ambulation are important to overall health and recovery from illness and injury. Often, this recovery includes the support of care providers skilled in lifting, moving, and supporting an individual with limited mobility. Some patients also need help with their basic needs because they not longer possess enough movement control to complete hygiene or other daily tasks without assistance. This course discusses how care providers can offer support to individuals with mobility and ambulation issues, whether that includes minimal support or more extensive lifting and transferring needs.

Transportation is an important part of life. From an early age, people have both desire and need to go places. Every day, millions of people use public transportation, Para transit, private services, health care providers, and school systems to get to different locations. While often taken for granted by those without disabilities, individuals with physical, emotional, and developmental disabilities recognize that a simple ride to the store may not be so simple. They may need special care and support, and they are dependent on trained transportation professionals to see that they have a safe ride. This course discusses how transportation professionals use special restraint devices to ensure they are transporting special needs passengers safely and effectively.

Mobility is an important part of human activity, and from an early age people have a need to move from place to place.  For people who depend on mobility assistance through wheelchairs, seemingly mundane daily tasks like shopping for groceries can quickly become complicated. Many disabled individuals rely on transportation provided by public services, private companies, and healthcare institutions in order to run errands and get to scheduled appointments. This course discusses how bus drivers with these organizations can ensure they are transporting passengers using wheelchairs safely, effectively, and legally.

Motor vehicle crashes are one of the leading causes of death and injury in the United States, killing over 1,000,000 people in 2012 alone.  Many of these deaths could have been prevented and injuries reduced through the use of safety belts and child safety seats. It is up to parents and caregivers to ensure that children are properly restrained in a motor vehicle with the right device for the size and age. This course discusses the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration guidelines for child safety in vehicles and walks through the steps for how to select and use several types of child car seats.
