Healthcare professionals in the surgical environment are at risk of exposure to potentially infectious agents from blood and other body fluids, as well as those transmitted via direct and indirect contact as well as the airborne route. The risk of infection is related to the degree of exposure to blood, body fluids, and other potentially infectious materials, as well as to contaminated surgical instrumentation and devices. Risk of exposure, in turn, depends upon factors such as the number of patients treated, the types of surgical procedures performed, and the implementation of risk reduction strategies. To control the risks of exposure and infection, those present in the perioperative environment must implement and utilize the Bloodborne Pathogens Standard, which mandates the use of Standard Precautions. Additional precautions, such as contact, droplet, and airborne precautions, may be needed for specific microorganisms. This online educational activity has been designed for professional nurses, healthcare industry representatives, and other healthcare personnel who are involved in the care of patients in the perioperative setting. It discusses bloodborne pathogens and other infectious diseases, transmission routes of infectious organisms, and the safeguards mandated by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Bloodborne Pathogens Standard for all employees at risk for exposure. Additional precautions for other routes of transmission are also reviewed.
