The goal of this online minimally invasive surgery (MIS) course is to provide the perioperative nurse with limited experience in MIS with the foundation knowledge required to become a contributing member of the MIS team. The goal of module 1 is to review and augment the perioperative RN's knowledge of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) patient risk factors that must be considered in the preoperative assessment. These risks include: positioning, fluid management, and intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The goal of module 2 is to review and augment the perioperative RN's knowledge of considerations in the intraoperative phase of minimally invasive surgery (MIS). The goal of module 3 is to provide the learner with knowledge regarding early recognition of the signs associated with the risks and potential complications of MIS procedures, including venous thromboembolism, CO2 embolism, fluid overload, inadvertent vascular and/or visceral injuries, burns, and unplanned hypothermia, and infection. The goal of module 4 is to provide the perioperative RN with knowledge regarding the postoperative care of the MIS patient, specifically the early recognition of the signs associated with the risks and potential complications of MIS procedures, including venous stasis, inadvertent vascular and/or visceral injuries, burns, unplanned hypothermia, nausea and vomiting, and potential fluid retention.

Few people think deeply about later life and the ways our culture and others have defined it and yet, most of us are likely to have preconceptions and sometimes false beliefs about aging and old age. Most people are preoccupied with their current lives and plans for the future: education, friends, relationships, careers, finances, and other markers of adulthood. Yet all cultures convey overt or covert messages and sometimes fears about old age. In this course, you will learn more about how society constructs old age as a distinct period of life. We will consider the importance of social class, race and ethnicity, and gender in defining people’s lives and opportunities. We will also focus on the myths and inaccuracies our culture perpetuates about aging, individuals in later life, and the process of growing old. Such beliefs not only pattern our own expectations about growing old but also have social, personal, and political consequences for older people themselves. We will also examine career opportunities in social gerontology. How gerontology developed as a field of study and the research methods used in social gerontology are also discussed.
