Capnography is a powerful field assessment tool for EMS providers. It is useful on intubated and conscious patients, and important as a prehospital triage and treatment guiding tool. Capnography greatly assists EMS providers develop, monitor and modify patient care plans, by providing immediate breath-to-breath information about the patient's respiratory status. Capnography offers a quantitative numerical reading and graphic waveform that measures, illustrates and documents a patient’s exhaled CO2 at the point in the respiratory cycle in which CO2 is highest (i.e., EtCO2). An elevated EtCO2 level is typically an indication of hypoventilation or increased metabolic activity. A low exhaled CO2 level may be an indication of hyperventilation, decreased cardiac output or poor pulmonary perfusion, which can occur in shock. The "normal" capnography waveform has a specific shape and can be differentiated from "abnormal" capnography waveforms. This course will provide the learner with basic information about respiratory anatomy and physiology, the principles of capnography and capnographic waveforms.

Transportation is an important part of life. From an early age, people have both desire and need to go places. Every day, millions of people use public transportation, Para transit, private services, health care providers, and school systems to get to different locations. While often taken for granted by those without disabilities, individuals with physical, emotional, and developmental disabilities recognize that a simple ride to the store may not be so simple. They may need special care and support, and they are dependent on trained transportation professionals to see that they have a safe ride. This course discusses how transportation professionals use special restraint devices to ensure they are transporting special needs passengers safely and effectively.

Motor vehicle crashes are one of the leading causes of death and injury in the United States, killing over 1,000,000 people in 2012 alone.  Many of these deaths could have been prevented and injuries reduced through the use of safety belts and child safety seats. It is up to parents and caregivers to ensure that children are properly restrained in a motor vehicle with the right device for the size and age. This course discusses the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration guidelines for child safety in vehicles and walks through the steps for how to select and use several types of child car seats.
