This course was written in direct response to the new CE requirement for the Florida Board of Nursing Renewals beginning in 2017: Recognizing Impairment in the Workplace. The requirement becomes effective August 1, 2017, then ever other biennium thereafter (every 4 years). Substance use disorder is underreported among nurses due to denial, fear of losing employment, risk of a tainted reputation, embarrassment, shame, and/or unawareness of available assistance. Substance abuse negatively affects a nurse's health and wellbeing and subsequently puts patient safety and quality of care at risk. Nurses that are able to identify impairment in the workplace, nurses that possess the knowledge of the process to report impairment as mandated by state law, and evaluate available alternative-to-disciplinary treatment programs for nurses. Nurses that understand impairment as a behavioral problem and report impairment in the workplace as an approach to help nurses regain their health and wellbeing and keep patients safe and quality of care intact. This course addresses the current gaps: knowledge of workplace impairment, ability to evaluate alternative treatment programs, and respect for the profession, health, and wellbeing of all. Upon successful completion nurses will be able to act on recognizing and reporting impairment in the workplace and treatment programs; promoting a safe, transparent, and non-judgmental work environment which in turn will have a positive impact on patient safety and quality of care. NOTE: This activity may be available in multiple formats or from different sponsors. ARRT regulations state that an individual may not repeat a self-learning activity for credit if it was reported in the same or any subsequent biennium.

Medications and solutions are frequently administered to patients as they undergo operative procedures. The accurate administration of these medications and solutions is essential for safe patient care and for the promotion of patient healing. The perioperative nurse has an important and unique role in their preparation and administration. This module will assist the perioperative nurse in identifying patient care factors related to medication and solution preparation. Additionally, specific medication categories, their actions, dosages, routes of administration, adverse reactions, and other considerations will be discussed. Discussion of medications and solutions in this module is limited to those medications and solutions within the responsibility of the perioperative nurse. IV medications are not typically administered by the perioperative nurse in the circulating role. Therefore, IV medications are not discussed in this module with the exception of conscious sedation medications. Also, medications usually administered by the anesthesia care provider are discussed in the anesthesia module. Specific medications and solutions will be discussed later in this module. **Please note this one module is part of the "AORN Periop 101" series.
