Intrapartum fetal heart rate monitoring is used to assess fetal oxygenation during labor to promote patient safety. To provide optimal patient care, providers (Registered Nurses, Nurse Midwives and Physicians) need to understand the terminology, interpretation of and patient management related to electronic fetal monitoring (EFM). The modules include content regarding components of uterine activity assessment, elements of fetal heart rate patterns, the correlation of fetal heart rate patterns to fetal acidemia, categories of fetal heart tracings, as well as appropriate patient management, teamwork and communication.

Medications and solutions are frequently administered to patients as they undergo operative procedures. The accurate administration of these medications and solutions is essential for safe patient care and for the promotion of patient healing. The perioperative nurse has an important and unique role in their preparation and administration. This module will assist the perioperative nurse in identifying patient care factors related to medication and solution preparation. Additionally, specific medication categories, their actions, dosages, routes of administration, adverse reactions, and other considerations will be discussed. Discussion of medications and solutions in this module is limited to those medications and solutions within the responsibility of the perioperative nurse. IV medications are not typically administered by the perioperative nurse in the circulating role. Therefore, IV medications are not discussed in this module with the exception of conscious sedation medications. Also, medications usually administered by the anesthesia care provider are discussed in the anesthesia module. Specific medications and solutions will be discussed later in this module. **Please note this one module is part of the "AORN Periop 101" series. Knowledge of aseptic techniques and sterile technique is essential to preventing postoperative infection in the surgical patient. All members of the surgical team are responsible for creating and maintaining a sterile environment before and during the surgical procedure. Sterilization and disinfection are key processes used in creating a sterile field. This module will help you understand those principles of aseptic technique, the surgical conscience, wound classification, and the processes related to sterilization and disinfection that are used in the surgical setting. This module will also review types of implants, the tracking of these devices, and an overview of tissue banking. **Please note this one module is part of the "AORN Periop 101" series. Surgical draping is an integral part of surgery. A sterile field must be created and maintained throughout the entire surgical procedure. Breaks in technique when establishing this area or any subsequent breaks must be identified immediately by the surgical team and corrected. Failure to do so could severely compromise the patient’s chances of avoiding a postoperative infection. Surgical infections increase recovery time and cost, and could severely debilitate the patient or even be fatal. Therefore, it is critical that perioperative nurses be knowledgeable of draping a surgical field. **Please note this one module is part of the "AORN Periop 101" series. Instruments are integral tools to all surgical procedures. The perioperative nurse must have an understanding of the use, handling, and care of surgical instruments. This understanding along with careful planning, preparation, and utilization of instruments contributes to an efficient, effective surgical procedure within a safe environment. Guidelines for instrument care and cleaning are essential and are based on manufacturer's recommendations. When new, the instruments arrive packaged with written guidelines, booklets, and/or audiovisuals supplied by the manufacturer. These guidelines, when followed, direct perioperative nurses and sterile processing staff members on safe and effective methods of cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilization and should always be followed. **Please note this one module is part of the "AORN Periop 101" series.
