Many individuals who are in a hospital or at home following a prolonged illness or injury that impacts mobility become frustrated when they cannot move around as they desire. Mobility and ambulation are important to overall health and recovery from illness and injury. Often, this recovery includes the support of care providers skilled in lifting, moving, and supporting an individual with limited mobility. Some patients also need help with their basic needs because they not longer possess enough movement control to complete hygiene or other daily tasks without assistance. This course discusses how care providers can offer support to individuals with mobility and ambulation issues, whether that includes minimal support or more extensive lifting and transferring needs.

In an effort to improve patient outcomes, hospitals, and health care centers around the country have implemented quality improvement measures to increase care coordination, patient safety, and preventive health services. The efforts of health care centers to implement quality improvement measures have been found to result not only in better care for at-risk populations but also to enhance patient experiences throughout their care. Despite these efforts to improve patient experiences, critical incidents continue to be a significant occurrence in the nursing and medical field. This course will provide an overview of critical incident reporting, discussing the circumstances when incident reports should be filled out. This course will also discuss the necessity of filling out critical incident reports and barriers to compliance. Lastly, new methods to critical incident reporting which may improve its effectiveness will be discussed.

“I have some bad news for you.”  No one likes hearing this statement, especially in a healthcare setting. For staff members and caregivers who work every day with the sick, injured, and elderly, having to be the bearer of bad news can become a common, almost routine part of the job. This can be a rather difficult chore for most people because everyone reacts differently to learning something that is life changing to his or her own health or the health of a loved one. Understanding how people grieve a variety of losses and how to communicate bad news has a direct impact on how the receiver understands and reacts to the situation. This course discusses why giving bad news is difficult as well as how to be both professional and empathetic when delivering challenging healthcare information.

The current outbreak of Ebola in West Africa has been connected to more than 4,000 deaths since the latest outbreak began late 2013 (Weintraub, 2014). The Ebola virus, formerly known as Ebola hemorrhagic fever, is a rare disease caused by an infection from the Ebola virus strains. While rare, it is severe and often fatal in humans. Wild animals are believed to transmit the virus to people, and it spreads through the human population through close person-to-person contact (WHO, 2014). This course provides an overview of the Ebola virus as well as information about the current outbreak and current approaches to treatment.

Communicating with others is a basic human need and the foundation for all social interactions. When healthcare workers effectively communicate with those for whom they care, it helps patients, clients, and residents feel less isolated and can improve their sense of wellbeing. Communicating effectively with peers, subordinates, and supervisors is not only an expectation of all healthcare professionals, it is also critical for ensuring patient wellbeing. Paying attention to another’s communication needs is one of the most important duties of a healthcare provider. When they understand how the communication process works and how to effectively send and receive message, healthcare workers are better able to meet patient needs.
