Over the past decade, suicide rates have risen with more individuals reporting suicidal thoughts and attempting suicide. With the increase of attempts and completed suicides, the need for suicide prevention is greater than ever. Suicide prevention programs have been successfully implemented to help prevent and respond to suicide, though research continues to address population specific risks. Mental health technicians should know the signs and symptoms of suicidal behavior as well as effective methods of intervention as they are often the front line of caring for patients suffering with complex and severe mental illness. This course discusses the risk factors for suicidal behaviors and discusses in detail the most effective suicide prevention approaches.

Over the past decade, the number of suicide attempts and completions has risen, resulting in a pressing need for suicide prevention. The societal impact of suicide cannot be measured as families and entire communities can be impacted when someone commits suicide, creating increased risk for all. There have been programs successfully implemented to help prevent and respond to suicide, but research is ongoing to address population specific risks. Effective prevention programs can decrease both the numbers of people at risk for suicide and its impact on society. Nursing assistants often interact with patients who present with an increased risk of suicidal behaviors and play a significant role in preventing suicide. This overview of suicide prevention will focus on the risk factors for suicide and discuss in detail the most effective prevention approaches.
