The Maternal Fetal Triage Index (MFTI) educational course educates perinatal nurses about obstetric triage basics—what triage means in obstetrics, the nurses’ role, and how a systematic approach can be beneficial to improve the process of triage and outcomes. -This online interactive learning introduces AWHONN’s Maternal Fetal Triage Index, a five-level acuity classification index, describing how it is used to prioritize a woman’s urgency for provider evaluation. Clinical cases throughout the course and in the posttest assist the nurse to apply the concepts presented to prioritize the cases.

This skill is associated with the skill verification for Adult Moderate Sedation. The student is evaluated performing the “TE” Technique, which instructs the provider how to manage an airway mask and ventilation bag utilizing a 2 man method. This technique uses the patient’s soft, loose tissue to seal the mask with ventilation. The provider then performs the 2 man ventilation for a patient using positive pressure breathing to a patient who is not adequately ventilating.

This skill is associated with the skill verification for Adult Moderate Sedation. The student is evaluated scoring an airway using the Mallampati difficult airway evaluation tool. This tool assigns a scored classification according to the extent the base of tongue is able to mask the visibility of pharyngeal structures, thus indicating a large tongue in the airway.

This skill is associated with the skill verification for Adult Moderate Sedation. The student is evaluated measuring for correct size and placement of a Nasopharyngeal Airway (NPA). The student is taught to premeasure this airway adjunct if the patient matches some preprocedure airway red flag criteria. First adjunct utilized to bypass the tongue for a patient who is still arousable (deep sedation) , but is unable to manage their own airway.

Adult Moderate Sedation is the second of the tiered educational module used for education/certification in moderate sedation. The safe practice building blocks identified in the foundational knowledge course are reinforced, with introduction to the next level on the sedation continuum, moderate sedation. Focus is placed on checklist mentality, patient evaluation with ASA scoring, airway evaluation and use of capnography for early recognition and intervention of complications associated with the higher comorbities and longer procedure times with that of the moderate sedation procedure or Procedural Sedation and Analgesia (PSA).
