AORN Periop 101: A Core Curriculum for PAs, Residents, and Medical Students

The goal of this modified curriculum is to provide basic education to allied health professionals that will enable them to observe and participate safely during invasive procedures. The topics covered in these eight modules are intended to introduce newcomers to the “mysteries” of the surgical environment. They will learn the fundamentals of sterile technique, basic instrumentation, and how to properly scrub, gown and glove. Included are modules on hemostasis, sponges and drains and safety aspects specific to invasive procedures. Module Titles: 1. Sterile Technique 2. Hemostasis, Sponges and Drains 3. Perioperative Safety: Introduction 4. Perioperative Safety: Patient Focus 5. Surgical Instruments 6. The Perioperative Environment 7. Scrubbing, Gowning and Gloving 8. Safety: Equipment Focus Course Objectives: At the completion of this course the learner will be able to: • List the principles of sterile technique. • Demonstrate ability to perform a proper surgical hand scrub. • Demonstrate ability to don a surgical gown and gloves using sterile technique. • Summarize the proper care and handling of surgical instruments including the use of a neutral zone. • Explain the importance of the universal protocol in ensuring patient safety. • Participate as appropriate in activities to prevent retained surgical items.
