The complex process that brings both mother and newborn through pregnancy to the day of birth is rarely appreciated. It is amazing that the sequence of events including fertilization, implantation, and development occur successfully most of the time. The purpose of this module is to clarify some of these processes in the context of the patient care delivered every day. This module provides an overview of physiologic and psychosocial adaptation to pregnancy building on knowledge of basic anatomy and physiology. It also includes a summary of information about some of the more common methods of prenatal assessment and screening.
