AWHONN POEP4 - Module 14: Perinatal LossCE
Produced by: AWHONN - Association of Women's Health, Obstetric, and Neonatal Nurses
"The purpose of this module is to introduce the topic and issues surrounding pregnancy loss and its aftermath. Responses to perinatal loss vary widely, but for many parents, the loss is unexpected and they do not know what to do, what to expect, or how to handle their grief. Also the consequences of perinatal loss are emotional, psychologic, spiritual, cognitive, physiological, and social in nature. This module will discuss various types of perinatal loss and the effects of the loss on the mother and her partner. Insights and strategies for caregiving, teaching, and helping families cope and continue their lives are addressed. This content should assist in sensitizing the nurse to the importance of interactions with women and their families during this time. These interactions may have an enduring positive or negative impact for years to come. This module will help nurses to recognize differences in the grief response that may occur as a result of modifiers such as attachment, culture, and gender. These differences can be used in planning individualized care for families. "
