More than two million Americans have opioid use disorders with millions more considered to misuse opioids. The number of people with treatment needs is staggering, and the challenges to treat individuals with addiction are significant. Healthcare providers encounter people from diverse backgrounds with symptoms of misuse, addiction, and withdrawal in emergency departments, outpatient, and inpatient medical or mental health settings. This course will discuss myths about addiction in general as well as specifically with opioids, current best practice for opioid addiction treatment, relapse, and how provider bias impacts each stage of treatment and recovery.
